Post by carebeautyindia »

Even though dandruff is not a very serious health problem, it can still become a source of embarrassment and insecurity in people. If you are the one, who suffers from flaky scalp more often, you can understand that utter frustration of consistently trying different treatments and not getting any results!!!
Actually, our skin is designed to silently shed dead and old skin cells and grow new ones. However, in this process, dandruff is a kink that causes old skin cells to build into unsightly flakes that may land on your favorite black dress. At some point of life, every person has to suffer from dandruff or flaky scalp. It is actually a mild form of seborrheic dermatitis, which is nothing but a skin condition marked by redness, yellow scales and inflammation of the scalp. While people associate this problem with dry and flaking scalp, it is actually caused by excess of oil.
What follows here is a list of some home remedies to get rid of dandruff. However, if your dandruff problem is serious and don’t get alleviated by these treatments, you better consult a a dermatologist.
What causes dandruff?
Excessive flaking of dead skin cells from the scalp is the major cause for dandruff. Dandruff is not an organism like lice, but dead skin that accumulates in scalp. When accompanied by irritation or redness, dandruff can be the symptom of seborrhoeic dermatis or psoriasis.
Other conditions that can cause dandruff are:
Oily skin- People generally believe that dandruff is caused due to dry scalp. However, it has been found in oily scalp as well. Excessive oil can dry out scalp leading to debris in the form of dandruff.
Fungi- There are certain form of dandruff that can only be caused by fungus. Just because fungus can’t be eliminated completely, dandruff can also not be exterminated, it can only be controlled.
Sweat- Sweating can also cause dandruff! If you work out regularly, you will sweat more especially if you do not wash it as often as you should.
Other factors include weather, use of hair oils and sprays, using harsh shampoo or not using shampoos, diet, stress and hormonal disorders.
Home treatments to get rid of dandruff
Neem Leaves- Add handful of neem leaves in three to five cups of hot water. Leave it overnight. Strain the liquid next morning and use it to rinse your hair. Besides keeping your scalp free from infections, itching and dandruff, it will also ensure healthy scalp. Moreover, it reduces dandruff. Neem leaves can also be used in another way. Make a paste of soaked neem leaves and apply on the scalp. After half an hour, rinse off with water.
Fenugreek seeds- Grind one tablespoon of methi seeds and soak it in cool water over night. Strain and use this water for the last rinse.
Lemon juice- Spread two table spoons of lime juice on your scalp and massage. Leave your head as it is for about 5 minutes and rinse with water. Your head will feel fresh and smell nice. Repeat this process every time you wash your hair, until the dandruff is completely gone.
Yogurt- Rub plain yogurt into the scalp and leave it for about 15 minutes. Rinse and wash again with little shampoo if necessary. You can also give the final rinse with two table spoon of vinegar or tea water for healthier scalp. Yogurt is not recommended as a hair conditioner, you can use it though to get rid of dandruff.
Coconut oil- Wash your hair with a good-quality shampoo, don’t use conditioner afterwards. After drying out your hair put coconut oil on your scalp and massage well. Wash out the coconut oil, until the oil is completely out. Repeat this process once weekly until the dandruff is gone.
Aspirin- Break two aspirin tablets between a thin cloth with the help of a hammer or other lightly pound. Add that crushed powder to your regular shampoo. While shampooing, leave the shampoo for about 2 minutes on hair and then rinse off gently.
Apple cider vinegar- Take equal parts say one tablespoon of water and vinegar and mix them. Pour the vinegar-water mixture onto your hair and massage into your scalp. Take care that you don’t let any drop get into your eyes. Leave your hair as it is, for about 10-15 minutes and rinse off. Repeat the process daily for about a week or until the dandruff remains.
Baking soda- Instead of shampooing, rub a heap of baking soda into your wet scalp. After two weeks of continuous baking soda treatment, your scalp will start producing natural oils, leaving the scalp moisturized and dandruff-free.
Henna treatment- This helps in removing dandruff by restoring natural balance. Add 2 raw eggs, 4 teaspoons each of coffee and lemon juice, one tea spoon of methi seed powder to the henna powder. Mix them well till a thick paste is formed. You can also add enough of tea water in it by boiling tea leaves in water for few minutes and straining and cooling the liquid. Apply the henna mixture on your hair and wash off after an hour. This method not only helps in preventing dandruff but also in conditioning hair adding shine, body and strength to it.
Things to keep in mind
• Wash your hair regularly! Experts recommend washing hair with an anti-dandruff shampoo until the dandruff subsides and after that, one can continue to wash their hair 2-3 times per week. Excessive shampooing can irritate the scalp making it dry and causing dandruff.
• If you have dandruff, you are required to brush your hair after shower. Well, brushing hair will help in distributing oil that naturally occurs in the scalp and hair.
• Avoid stress as it is the major cause of dandruff. Try to deal with it in healthy and effective ways.
Natural techniques for dandruff removal are sure to give effective results but as they are slow, people might think of switching to artificial technique to get rapid results. Well let me tell you that these artificial methods might give quick results but are always accompanied by one or the other side-effect. So, it is always better to switch to natural treatments to deal with dandruff.
